Be sure to check out "The Fun Stuff!" tab to watch our Thanksgiving Readers' Theater performances! We had so much fun practicing our expressive reading while preparing for these!
December is always a very busy time at school. There are many important upcoming events:
*We are still in need of many candles for an upcoming activity. If you have old or unwanted candles, please send them our way! We can use pillars, tapers, and votives (really anything that isn't in a container). Please send candles to school no later than Monday, December 8th. Thank you for your help!
*This year will be the Thirteenth Annual “Gifts from the Heart” food drive. Every year, the Monroe School Community joins together to help those living in Monroe who are in need of assistance during the holidays. Each grade level will be responsible for donating selected items. Second grade is in charge of dry goods (mac & cheese, pasta, rice, noodles, etc.). The collection will run from Dec. 1st - Dec. 12th.
*Thursday, December 11th is our day to visit the school Santa Shop. Students will have the opportunity to purchase gifts for friends and family on this day. (More information to come!)
*Tuesday, December 16th we will be making gingerbread houses! We are in need of supplies for this activity. If you would like to send something in, please sign-up using the Google Doc:

*Wednesday, December 17th will be our class holiday party! I will be sending out a Google Doc sign-up for anyone who would like to send in items for the party or volunteer to run a station. (More information to come!)
*Thursday, December 18th we will snuggle into our pajamas and board the Polar Express! We will be going to the auditorium for a special viewing of the Polar Express movie and will also be reading the book so that we can compare and contrast the two versions of the story. A permission slip for the movie will be coming home soon!
*Thursday, December 18th is also students' last day before the Winter Break!
*Friday, December 19th through Sunday, January 4th is Winter Break! We return to school on Monday, January 5th.
*Our first and second quarter awards assembly will be held on Thursday, January 8th at 1:00 in the auditorium. (More information to come!)
I told you this is a busy time of year! :)
This week we will be learning...
Math: We will begin our study of patterns. We will be using snap cubes to create color patterns and learn about different types of patterns. For example: red, blue, red, blue, red, blue is an AB pattern because there are two different colors which repeat; red, blue, green, red, blue, green, red, blue, green is an ABC pattern because there are three different colors which repeat.
Reading: We will be comparing and contrasting nonfiction texts about similar topics. This is in preparation for next week when we will be comparing and contrasting multiple versions of the fictional story of the Gingerbread Man.
Writing: Our animal research projects continue! This week we will learn how to turn the information we gathered during our research into complete sentences which can be used in our writing.
Word Study: Our spelling patterns for the week are -ge and -dge.
Social Studies: We will examine how things change over time by taking a look at how the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade has evolved since its first celebration in 1924.
Poetry: Our poem for the week is called, "Something Told the Wild Geese."
Have a wonderful week!
