Spring conferences are this week. They will be held the evenings of Tuesday, February 2nd and Thursday, February 4th. Spring conferences are an opportunity for us to meet face-to-face to discuss questions or concerns you may have. I will be available both these evenings if you would like to request a conference. I am also able to share information about your child's progress via phone or email. Please contact me if you would like to schedule a face-to-face conference, or if you would like an update on our child's progress via phone or email.
Looking ahead, I will be out for professional development on Monday, February 8th and Tuesday, February 9th. While I will still be checking my email, please direct urgent communication (i.e. change of transportation) to the office so that this information can be passed along to the substitute. Please let me know if you have any questions!
Please remember there is no school for students on Friday, February 12th or Monday, February 15th.
The second grade music concert is coming up at the end of this month. It is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, February 25th. More information will be coming soon!
We will be having a Valentine's Day celebration on Thursday, February 11th. Students may bring in Valentines to pass out to classmates. If your child brings Valentines, please ensure he/she has one for each student. We currently have 24 students in our class. I will be sending home a class list to help with filling out Valentines. We will also enjoy ice cream sundaes while we pass out our Valentines. If you would like to send in an ice cream sundae topping, please sign up by following the link below. Thank you in advance!

This week we will be learning...
Word Study: Our spelling patterns for the week are short i and long i with silent e. Our sight words are: upon, these, sing, together, please
Math: We will continue our work with story problems, focusing on developing efficient methods for adding 2-digit numbers, adding tens and ones to combine 2-digit numbers, and writing equations to represent story problems.
Reading: This week we will be starting one of my favorite books: Charlotte's Web. As we read this book together, students will be working to deeply comprehend the text through discussion and written response. We will be asking ourselves what we know about the text, what we can infer from the text, and what we wonder about the text.
Writing: We've wrapped up letter writing and now we're ready to really dig into persuasive writing. When we write persuasively, our goal is to get something, change something, or give an opinion about something. We will be talking about and experimenting with these different types of persuasive writing over the next few weeks. We will also be looking at how our audience can affect the reasoning we use when trying to be persuasive.
Social Studies: In addition to learning about Punxsutawney Phil (and keeping our fingers crossed that he does not see his shadow on Tuesday), we will be reading about influential African Americans in honor of Black History Month.
Poetry: Our poem this week is called, "A Snowflake Fell."
Have a wonderful week!
