Last week, we had the awesome opportunity to Skye with children's book author Todd Parr. Todd shared several of his books with us, and we got to ask him lots of questions about what it's like to be an author. We also learned that Todd had a hard time learning to read when he was in school, but he turned that struggle into a passion for writing fun books that growing readers can enjoy. Make sure to check "The Fun Stuff!" tab for some pictures of this great event!
This week we will be learning...
Math: We will continue to practice efficient strategies for solving addition and subtraction story problems, especially those with double digit numbers. We are also learning strategies for solving addition problems with multiple addends (i.e. 2+4+3+6=15).
Reading: We are beginning our study of nonfiction. This week, we will learn about the different text features used to organize nonfiction texts, and how these features help readers to find what they're looking for and better understand what they're reading.
Writing: We have moved on to the publishing phase of our personal narratives, and as we wrap those up, we will be starting our study of "How-To" explanatory writing.
Poetry: Our poem this week is called, "Who Has Seen the Wind?"
Word Study: Instead of a traditional spelling list, this week we are studying adverbs. Adverbs are descriptive words used to modify verbs. We use adverbs in our writing and our speaking to make what we're trying to convey clearer and more interesting.
Sight Words I Can Spell: look, is, her, there, some
Sight Words I Can Read: hurt, pull, cut, kind, both
Science: In addition to keeping a close eye on our terrarium habitat, we will begin studying weather and how weather can cause changes on Earth.
Have a wonderful week!
