Homemade Lava Lamp Instructions
Create Your Own Lava Lamp
1. Using a funnel, add ¼ cup of water to an empty water bottle.
2. Add 1 cup of vegetable oil using the funnel.
3. Wait a couple of minutes and observe what happens.
4. Add 5 drops of 1 color of food coloring.
What is happening to the water, oil, and food coloring?
5. Break the Alka-Seitzer tablet into 8 pieces.
6. You can either add all 8 pieces at once or add a few at a time.
What do you notice happening? Why do think this is happening?
7. Once the bubbling stops, put the lid on tightly and shake up the bottle.
What happens?
***Unfortunately the lava lamp effect only lasts for so long. Why do you think that is?

Poetry
Here are some examples of poems we have written as a class during our poetry unit!
Found Poems:
Skunk
Warning!
Watch out!
You know to stay away
From skunks!
Warning!
If you bother one
You’ll be sorry!
You’ll be sorry!
Spider Webs
Spiders are very delicate
Spiders spin webs to live in
Silky, sticky, shiny webs
Color Poem:
Green in Spring
Green is the new leaves growing in the spring
Green sounds like baby birds chirping in their nests for their mothers to bring them food
It feels like the tickle of the cool spring breeze
Green is the sweet smell of the baby leaves on the trees
Green reminds me of the lettuce growing in the farm fields
Comparing and Contrasting Poem:
Lions and Tigers
Lions hide in tall grass
Tigers do not
Tigers have stripes
Lions do not
Lions and tigers are both carnivores.
Lions roar
Tigers do not
Tigers growl
Lions do not
Lions and tigers are both big cats!
Lions are called the King of the Jungle
Tigers are not
Tigers have white fur on their chins
Lions do not
Lions and tigers both have tails.
List Poem:
Video Games

We treat each other with kindness!
At Monroe Elementary, we've set the goal of making 2013 a bully-free year. In an effort to help our school meet that goal, we spent some time talking about the concepts of "random acts of kindness" and "paying it forward." Below is a video about paying it forward, followed by a video of our own. :)
