Math: As we continue practicing our ability to fluently add numbers within 100, we will focus this week on solving story problems with more than one step. For example: Sally has four apples. Sam has three more apples than Sally. Linda has two fewer apples than Sam. How many apples do Sam and Linda have?
Word Study: Our spelling concept for the week is ink, ank, onk, unk. The ending -nk is paired with one of four vowels and is taught as a single sound unit at the end of a word or syllable. Our sight words are: start, black, white
Reading: This week we will be learning about inferring. Readers make inferences all the time without even thinking about it, so we will practice inferring using a variety of texts. Can anyone make an inference to figure out what this poem is about? Are there any clues?
I munch. I crunch.
I zoom. I roar.
I clatter-clack
Across the floor.
I swallow twigs.
I slurp dead bugs.
I suck the cat hair
From the rugs.
My stomach full
Of dirt and dust
I gulp another
Pizza crust.
A tiresome life –
All work, no play –
I think I’ll swallow you today!
-Patricia Hubbell
Writing: Most students are nearing completion of the first drafts of their personal narratives. We will be reviewing important components of a narrative (leads, details with showing not telling, and endings), and students will be working in pairs to peer edit and prepare for publishing.
Science: This week we will be working as zoologists to observe and study the behaviors of earthworms! We will also be creating a "worm bin" so that we can observe the worms long-term.
Poetry: Our poem this week is called, "An Autumn Greeting."
Have a fabulous week!
