A few things to keep in mind:
-There is NO SCHOOL on Monday, September 5th in honor of Labor Day.
-Orders and money for second grade t-shirts are due Friday, September 9th. I cannot accept orders after this date.
-There is NO SCHOOL for students on Friday, September 16th for a teacher in-service day.
-The first homework assignment of this year will be sent home on Friday. It will include spelling, reading, and math practice. Homework typically goes home on Friday and is due the following Friday, but this assignment will be due Thursday, September 15th because of the teacher in-service on the 16th.
This week we will be learning...
Math: We are beginning our second math unit of the year: "Working with Equal Groups." During this unit, we will be learning about even and odd numbers, arrays, and repeated addition. This week we will focus on the concepts of even and odd. We will learn how to tell if a number is even or odd, and we will explore which types of addition equations have even and odd sums (i.e. even + even = even, odd + odd = even, even + odd = odd).
Word Study: We will spend our word study time this week reviewing consonant, short vowel, and digraph sounds from first grade and establishing our word work routine. We will be diving into our first spelling patterns next week!
Reading: We will be learning about point of view and discussing how different characters in the same story can have very different points of view. We will also consider how these different points of view affect characters' actions and decisions.
Writing: Growing Writers always plan their writing before they begin drafting a piece, so this week we will be learning how to plan our writing by choosing a topic, narrowing it down, and deciding which details are important to include in our upcoming personal narratives.
Science: Our first science unit begins this week! We will be exploring some common misconceptions about who can be a scientist (i.e. only old men in lab coats), and will be learning to practice some of the skills of a scientist, like forming hypotheses and using the five senses to make observations.
Poetry: Our poem this week is called, "Rope Rhyme." Weather permitting, we might just take to the playground to explore the rhythm of this poem!
Have a great week!
