Looking ahead...
Our Valentine's Day celebration will be Tuesday, February 14th. Students are welcome to bring cards to pass out on this day. Please note that we now have 25 students in our class! If you would like to send a treat, or if you need a class list, please click below:
The second grade music performance is scheduled for Tuesday, February 21st! Our class will perform at 7:00. Students will need to arrive in the elementary cafeteria by 6:45. The children have been working very hard to prepare and are so excited to sing for you!
Spring pictures are scheduled for Tuesday, February 28th.
Spring conference dates are quickly approaching. They will be held the evenings of Thursday, March 2nd and Tuesday, March 7th. Spring conferences are an opportunity for us to meet face-to-face to discuss questions or concerns you may have. I will be available both these evenings if you would like to request a conference. I am also able to share information about your child's progress via phone or email. Please contact me if you would like to schedule a conference.
This week we will be learning...
Math: We will be starting our eleventh unit of study, "Subtract Within 1,000 Using Models and Strategies." We will be reviewing the strategies we learned for double-digit subtraction and applying them to triple-digit subtraction.
Word Study: Our spelling concept for the week is: Magic e
Examples: cake, lane, same, gave, these, eve, side, hide, bike, bone, home, tone, mute, huge
Sight Words: done, use, fast
Reading: We will be learning about context clues. Context clues are hints an author gives to help the reader understand unusual or difficult words. These clues can come in text or picture form. We will be working as word detectives to find and use these clues!
Writing: Our opinion writing unit will officially begin this week! When we write persuasively, our goal is to get something, change something, or give an opinion about something. We will be talking about and experimenting with these different types of persuasive writing over the next few weeks. We will also be looking at how our audience can affect the reasoning we use when trying to be persuasive.
Social Studies: In addition to learning about Punxsutawney Phil (and keeping our fingers crossed that he does not see his shadow on Thursday), we will be reading about influential African Americans in honor of Black History Month.
Poetry: Our poem this week is called, "A Snowflake Fell."
Have a wonderful week!
